How do I print Form 1096

Post by Glory.Bound »

We've got the 1099's under control - how do we generate Form 1096 to send 1099 info to the IRS?

Thanks!

Since nobody else is going to chime in, I think the later versions (8.5 or v9) will do 1099's.. However, if you're on v8 or lower, you're out of luck..

Actually, PC+ has never printed 1096s in any version that I have manuals for (7 thru 9), so I believe this will need to be a manual function.

That explains why I can't find it in version 9 then. It seems like this would be a useful function since the infomation we print on 1099s has to be reported to the IRS on form 1096.

Thanks for the information, rflower and NeilZ!

Hmm.. Seems strange to have the 1099 capability but not the 1096.. Can this be put on the wish list?

Since the 1096 is basically a 'cover sheet' for the copies of 1099's sent to the IRS, I can't see spending the time and effort in getting this setup to print as a good use of resources. That said, a summary sheet of the 1099 data that can be printed out for entry to a 1096 would be a good function.

We decided not to print a 1096 directly for the very reasons Neil listed. Also I believe most people receive a preprinted 1096 with the contact information already filled in. On the screen where you print the 1099s there is an option to print the 1096 info. I believe it gives you the info you need to fill in the 1096.

If that's the case, that seems reasonable to me.. Thanks for the info..

The other thing you can do is to set the layout for the 1096 up in a spreadsheet. I have done this and it works fine. It takes a few tweeks and tests to get it right, but once it is done you can take the information PC+ gives you and enter it into the sheet then print your 1096. Of course if you have neat hand writing you can just enter the information by hand. I do not, so the spreadsheet is better for me, even though it takes longer.
