Reposting multi-year prepaid pledge payments

Post by OhBeWan »

Donor gives a donation of $1,000 in November 2024. It was their 2025 pledge. Donor gives a donation of $2,000 in December 2024. The donor says it is a 2026 pledge. We recorded both contributions against their 2025 pledge. Now it is November 2025. Their 2025 Contribution Statement shows: $0 tax contributions and $3,000 against the 2025 pledge. The tax part is right but not the pledge part.

To fix this, I think I go into Contributions>View Posted Contributions>Select (their envelope)>click the contribution in question>Reverse/Correct.I have not gone any further than this. I think before Reverse/Correct, I need to set up their 2026 pledge. Anything else? Any better way?

I also think that I may have to fix some General Ledger stuff, but that should be pretty easy.

Never seen multi-year prepaid contributions.

This is news to me too, the part being, they will be given any deduction based on the amount given this year, it would not be carried over. As far as the actual funds, church's run on a CASH basis, you cannot count funds given in 2025, and show as income for 2026, nor can you show that there's a tax deduction in 2026.

What you can do is create the pledges, and show on the pledge that the pledge has been fulfilled by entering the amount given as the pledge start balance. Again, they won't get a contribution statement, but if you print your statements including the pledge balance, they will see that the pledge has been fulfilled.

First, thanks for answering so quickly.
Ah, I communicated poorly. I understand that from the donor's standpoint it is all cash basis.

The donor statement is correct from a cash basis donation/tax standpoint. I was trying to fix the bottom part where it shows all of his payments as contributions towards his 2025 pledge. Part is 2025 pledge and part is 2026 pledge and it was all given in 2024.

How do I move one of the 2024 donations to apply to his 2026 pledge without changing his tax stuff?

You had said he wouldn't receive a statement in 2025 unless he donated other times. He did.

Thanks.
