Got a question or comment about PowerChurch that doesn't belong anywhere else? Why not post it here!?

Networking Computers ?

Post by swm »

Can you give me the proper steps on how to network a few computers to our main PowerChurch Computer? The PowerChurch Computer uses Windows 7 Professional......and the other computers will be using Windows 7 (various versions) and Windows XP........

I have run Netsetup off of the main PowerChurch Computer before with our old networking system and we did pretty good.......

Also, when I upgrade to PC Version 11 will I have to redo the whole process again?????

Will this networking work on the Windows XP computers too??

Thanks
Donna

Donna,

you will have to do the same steps you did before, including the running of NetSetup10.EXE, the steps are listed here:

http://powerchurch.com/support/kb/kbvie ... icle_id=33

This should work with all the computers on your network.
Some advice on moving the program to the new server:

1. Backup your current Powerchurch database using the Powerchurch backup utility.
2. Press the (ALT-F1) keys together. Copy the registration number and info listed there.
3. Download a copy of the latest Maintenance Release for version 10 to the new machine
4. Install the program on the new machine using the CD
5. Run the Maintenance Release
6. Start Powerchurch, select NO when asked if you are migrating.
7. Enter your registration number and data from step 2. The system will then create an empty database.
8. RESTORE the backup you made in step 1
9. Follow the networking instructions shown in the article listed above.

Finally, you WILL have to run the NetSetup11.EXE program when you upgrade. Version 11 changed some of the way the Powerchurch uses its program files on networked computers, so this is going to be a necessary step.

The networking process will be the same as previously done.

Things I would do, were it I which is setting up new machines.

On the Windows 7 workstation which is to be the server, and someone's workstation. I will create a standard user with a password. On the PowerChurch folder, Security properties I would remove the Inherited properties from the parent. Give Administrators, the actual workstation user, and this new user full access to this and all children.

On the workstations that will connect to the 'server', I will map a drive using this user. This removes the ability of a workstation getting to other files on that Windows 7.

Something to be aware of when running NetSetup on a Vista or Windows 7 machine. NetSetup needs Administrator access. When you map a drive to the standard user, the administrator privilege does not get that mapping. This is just for the setup that it is needed. If you start a command prompt with administrative privileges type NET USE. This will show you what is not available. You'll only need to link one, then you can run NetSetup from that command window.

Let's say the workstation being the server is named "ADMIN1". The standard user that's been added is "PCPLUS" with a password of "Password" (I'm fairly certain this won't be the password though [smile]). You've shared the PowerChurch folder (the recommended folder to share) as "PowerChurch".

The command to map P: in the administrative privileged command prompt will be as follows:
NET USE P //ADMIN1/POWERCHURCH Password /USER:ADMIN1\PCPLUS

To run NetSetup in Version 11
P:
CD PCPLUS11\INSTALL
NETSETUP11

This will install the run time files need and create a link on the desktop. You're done with the command prompt, and can start using PowerChurch as the standard user on the workstation.

I realize the configuration of networking computers can be outside of ones expertise and appear confusing. I do not wish to confuse and you do not need to follow my thoughts on this. I do hope this helps some along the way.

Thank you both.

Do you suggest that we run the powerchurch program directly off of the powerchurch main computer or directly off of the network server that we will be using? I'm sure it can be done both ways. We've not put the powerchurch program on the server in times past....we just ran it on the main powerchurch computer. What do you suggest? Which would be the easiest for us. :D Or maybe I should say, the simplest for us. :wall:

If you have a network server, that is the better place to do the main install of PowerChurch.

It is possible to install to a mapped drive, this would be done when the network server is a Linux variety or a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device.
