The publisher could not be verified message when running PowerChurch Plus

Windows XP users have recently reported that when starting PowerChurch Plus in a network environment, they are receiving a prompt from Windows reading "Open File - Security Warning... The publisher could not be verified." This dialog appears every time PowerChurch Plus (and many other programs) are started in a network environment.

This can be attributed to increased security settings by a recent installation of Internet Explorer 7 and/or Windows Defender.

PLEASE NOTE: Many solutions to this problem involve significantly lowering security settings on your local or network environment. PowerChurch Software does not suggest removing the security standards that Microsoft has seen fit to put in place.

That being said, there are many solutions that have been posted on the Internet that leave your computer more at risk than necessary. We suggest researching all of the options before taking any steps to resolve this issue.

The workaround supplied in this article: http://www.intelliadmin.com/blog/2006/10/why-some-shortcuts-say-publisher.html seems to be the most reasonable:

  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Click on "Tools"
  • Select "Internet Options"
  • Click the "Security" tab
  • Select "Local Intranet"
  • Click "Sites"
  • Click "Advanced"
  • Add your server (computer where PowerChurch Plus is installed) to the list of sites
  • Click OK on each of the screens until you're back out to Internet Explorer
